About

As someone who's always considered themselves quite savvy when it comes to online dealings, I recently encountered a scam attempt that almost had me fooled - and out of US$1098.98, no less. This experience has reinforced the importance of staying alert and cautious, especially when it involves financial transactions online. Here’s my story.

The Deceptive Beginning:

It all started with what I believed to be a legitimate email from Etsy. I was informed that I had made a sale for 78.05 EUR of my Lakes Entrance Surf Beach Aluminium Print. Naturally, I was thrilled, but little did I know that this was the beginning of a scam.

The Stripe Payment Window:

To process the payment, I was directed to a Stripe payment window to verify my new Visa card. Recently, I had changed my card due to an unauthorized transaction, so the request didn't seem unusual. I entered my Visa details, but then came the odd part – they asked for my account balance to verify the card. Despite finding it a bit peculiar, I didn't hesitate much in providing this information.

The Friendly Chat Bot:

When the verification didn't work, a chat window popped up, offering help. It didn't feel like an AI interaction; it seemed too on-the-ball. We tried different variations for verification - including negative signs and available balance, but nothing worked.

The SMS Scam Attempt:

The chat support then shifted to a different tactic: SMS verification. Soon, I received a text from ANZ with a warning. It was asking me to authorize a payment of US$1098.90 to OZON. Alarms went off in my head – something was definitely amiss.

Taking Action:

I immediately contacted ANZ, leading to my card being cancelled, with a new one to be issued within a week. Reflecting on the incident, it struck me how sophisticated these scammers are getting.

Conclusion:

This incident was a wake-up call. No matter how tech-savvy you think you are, it’s crucial to remain vigilant. Always question unusual requests, especially when they involve your financial information. Stay safe and stay alert – the scammers are indeed getting cleverer by the day.

Remember, it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your personal and financial information online. Be wary, and don't hesitate to double-check whenever something feels off.
