I’m Colin Dixon, a Mallacoota carer managing my mum’s Home Care Package (HCP). Full-service providers charge steep fees —over $1,200 a month— taking a big cut while underpaying workers. Self-managed care saves you money, gives you control, and pays workers fairly. Here’s what I’ve learned

The Problem
A Level 3 HCP is $42,000 a year. Full-service providers grab $14,000 in fees, leaving $28,000 for care. They often keep half that as profit, paying workers just 40%—less for you, low wages for them.
The Fix: Self-Managed Care
Self-managing cuts fees by up to half. You run your HCP or NDIS plan, paying workers directly. Two options work for Mallacoota:
- Self-Managed with Trilogy (15%): $6,000/year fees. You handle tech and paperwork—great if you’re confident.
- Self-Managed Plus with Mallacoota Cares (26%): $11,000/year fees. Local help for the rest of us.
Unspent funds build up for later.

Note: From July 2025, Support at Home switches to 8 funding levels—same idea applies.
How to Start
- Contact Trilogy: Call 1300 459 190 with your HCP code (e.g., 1-123456789012) to self-manage at 15%.
- Or Mallacoota Cares: Visit mallacootacares.com.au for the 26% option with local help.
- Set Up Payments: Use Mable for easy billing (optional—I prefer Trilogy direct for lower fees).
